Transdisciplinary Education for Circularity in Construction – Leveraging Building Information Modelling for Material Reuse

In 2023, a collaborative team from the University of Pretoria was awarded the Quanser Global Sustainability Award for an innovative educational initiative that reimagines how future built environment professionals are trained. In this webinar, we share the story behind our project — a transdisciplinary postgraduate classroom where architecture, civil engineering, and quantity surveying students worked together to address circularity challenges in the construction sector. Using a real-world case study involving two heritage greenhouses, students developed a circularity-oriented Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflow to enable the selective deconstruction and reuse of materials. Along the way, they transformed disciplinary silos into a dynamic flipped-classroom model, co-creating digital tools, material inventories, and shared knowledge. The initiative fostered technical skill development, systems thinking, and real-world collaboration, receiving recognition from both academia and industry. We will reflect on the inspiration behind the project, the collaborative learning process, and the wide-ranging impact — from institutional change and student employment opportunities to strengthened sustainability education. We also share the value of receiving the Quanser Award, and how it has empowered us to advocate for more integrative, circular, and future-facing approaches to engineering and architectural education.
