Dr. May
Professor of Technical Education and Engineering Education Research
School of Mechanical Engineering and Safety Engineering
University of Wuppertal, Wuppertal, Germany
Dr. May’s work bridges fundamental theory and hands-on practice to advance the education of engineers. His primary research focuses on the design, implementation and pedagogical evaluation of online laboratories—ranging from remote and virtual to cross-reality platforms—and on online experimentation within engineering and technical education contexts. He also develops evidence-based strategies for Technical and Engineering Education and crafts instructional concepts that immerse students in international study environments. By fostering intercultural collaboration, his approaches empower learners to acquire competencies that transcend cultural boundaries. Before joining the University of Wuppertal, Dr. May was Assistant Professor at the Engineering Education Transformations Institute, University of Georgia (Athens, GA, USA).
Dr. May is President of the International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE), where he champions the global adoption and application of Online Engineering technologies. As Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning (iJET) and Associate Editor for the European Journal of Engineering Education (EJEE), he promotes interdisciplinary dialogue among engineers, educators and education researchers. As an active member of the global Engineering Education Research community, Dr. May has organized several international conferences such as the annual International Conference on Smart Technologies & Education (STE) and serves on the boards of several ASEE divisions and international conference programs.
