How did you first become engaged with IFEES—and why?
I first became engaged with IFEES through initiatives and events that sought to bridge global engineering education with broader social impact—particularly around diversity, inclusion, and peacebuilding. The mission of IFEES resonated deeply with my own commitment to fostering inclusive innovation and empowering communities through engineering. I was drawn to the global nature of the network and the opportunity to collaborate across cultures and disciplines to shape a more sustainable and equitable future. I would just like to add that the first time I reached out to IFEES was through my own research network, at an event in 2016 in Iquitos, Ecuador, with people who truly care about engineering education. It was there that I met Hans Hoyer, who invited me to participate in the WEEF/GEDC 2017 conference—and that was the beginning of a meaningful journey within the IFEES community.
As you have become a leader in the community, what was your journey – your inspiration and motivation?
My journey has always been guided by the belief that technology and education must serve humanity. Coming from Brazil and being deeply involved with the i3g Institute, I have long worked at the
intersection of social justice, citizenship, and technological development. The Peace Engineering framework became a natural path for me—it integrates emotional intelligence, ethics, and global
responsibility with technical knowledge. Within IFEES, I found a unique space where these values are not only shared but actively implemented. Being part of this community has inspired me to keep working toward meaningful change, especially through global collaboration and inclusive leadership.
What value do you see—personally and professionally—in active engagement in the IFEES community?
Personally, IFEES has given me a profound sense of belonging in a global movement committed to advancing engineering with purpose. It’s a space where my voice is heard, and where I can learn from
others with diverse perspectives and experiences. Professionally, IFEES opens doors to transformative partnerships, interdisciplinary projects, and platforms like WEEF-GEDC where impactful conversations take place. It’s not just a professional network—it’s a community where values align with action.
What words of advice and encouragement would you give to others in hopes of their joining in the
good work and great connections that come with membership in IFEES?
To anyone considering getting involved: IFEES is a place where your ideas, energy, and values can truly make a difference. Whether you’re just starting your journey or are a seasoned leader, there is room
here for you to grow, connect, and contribute. The strength of IFEES lies in its people—passionate, visionary, and dedicated to building a better world through engineering education. Don’t hesitate to bring your voice, your culture, and your dreams into this space. You’ll be met with open arms and inspiring collaborators.
Any final thoughts?
We’re living in a time when the challenges we face are complex and interconnected—and they require us to work across borders and disciplines. IFEES embodies this spirit of collaboration, and it’s an honor to be part of a community that believes engineering can and should be a force for peace, inclusion, and transformation.
