The University of La Serena (Chile) was awarded with public funds to carry out a project to improve the quality of universitary tertiary education (Mecesup). The project was named ULS0401 “Experimental Curriculum Renewal of the Engineering careers of the Universities in Northern Chile, based on a Common Degree”. This project involved five universities in northern Chile; which formed the network of northern universities (RUN). As a result of the project a “Common Core” for the different universities careers of the RUN network and a profile of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering were obtained. The “Common Core” was defined for macroand micro-curricular levels of design that is, reaching details as the name of the subjects, the number of hours of direct teaching and its contents, a common format for syllabus, including goals for each unit, relevant activities, hours of direct teaching, etc.
