The research developed investigated motivational orientations and learning strategies of students from School of Engineering University of the Republic, analyzing relationships with student achievement. The addition of components to investigate other variables provides valuable information to understand the difficulties in the University High School transit and the high level of failure and delay. The results show for all generations studied the Prospective students have a predominant trend towards achievement motivation for learning which is considered appropriate to undertake a university degree. To advance careers, students maintain a predominant tendency towards a kind of achievement motivation. The students’ intrinsic motivation plays an important role in the initiation and maintenance of learning and correlated with academic performance. The integration of these dimensions was an important factor explaining the academic performance and is essential for the design of teaching strategies appropriate to the context.
