Northeast Bioenergy and Bioproducts Institute at University of Maryland Eastern Shore: Enhancing Bioenergy Literacy for Educators in STEAM

NBB (Northeast Bioenergy and Bioproducts) program aligns with the overarching vision to expand the familiarity and knowledge of complex topics such as bio-energy and bio-products among middle school, high school, and undergraduate university level STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Mathematics) teachers and faculty participating in the program. The one-week Master Teachers Training (MTT) Program was held at University of Maryland Eastern Shore with a total of 10 STEAM participants consisting of in-service teachers, undergraduate and graduate assistants, and university faculty and researchers. Through discussions and hands-on experiences, the participants learned and designed projects related to biodiesel and bioproducts along with the training of incorporating research and educational materials in schools and university classrooms.Through the collaborative efforts of professionals, new opportunities in interdisciplinary education in bio-energy were developed besides providing benefits to the recruitment and retention of engineering and science students in the programs.
