Update on IFEES Award

It is a pleasure to announce that the process to form the new IFEES Leadership Award Committee has just been completed. The members of the IFEES Award Committee are Doug Gorham of IEEE, USA; Oswald Franks of ECSA, South Africa; Tan Moorthy of Infosys, India; Gudrun Kammasch of IGIP, Europe and Euan Lindsay of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education. Stephanie Eng and Hans J. Hoyer will be non-voting members of the committee.

The Committee expects to complete its work in a few months and present its recommendation of three finalists to the IFEES Executive Committee. The Executive Committee will then make the final decision of who will receive IFEES' first award to be presented in Singapore on October 19, 2010 during the IFEES Awards Banquet. Be sure to let the Secretary General know if you have any questions. More information on the Award can be found on the IFEES Award page.

Meetings Amongst European IFEES Member Societies

During the first week of March, several IFEES officials attended various meetings and conferences in Istanbul and Lisbon, organized by our European colleagues in SEFI, EUGENE and EUR-ACE. One was the EUR-ACE SPREAD Mid Term Conference hosted by MUDEK (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs), where more than 60 colleagues from European countries presented their plans and outcomes for ensuring quality and transparency in engineering education. Organized by EUR-ACE coordinator Giuliano Augusti on March 1st 2010, the Conference invited speakers and moderators including IFEES 1st Vice President Hasan Mandal, IFEES Founding President Claudio Borri, former BEST President Omer Hantal, and IFEES President Lueny Morell. [See President Lueny Morell's presentation here].

Lueny Morell also participated in the EUGENE project's administrative meeting held on Tuesday, March 2nd, where leaders from EUGENE thrust lines discussed their plans and transversal activities of this innovative European project to advance European and Global Engineering Education. One of the lines, led by President of ISEL, Jose Carlos Quadrado, proposes to establish the European Engineering Deans Council, which is planned to be launched later this year in Paris.

Finally, in response to Vice Rector Hasan Mandal, the IFEES President had the opportunity to visit Anadolu University in Eskisehir, where she met with university officials and faculty, made a presentation on the Challenges of Engineering Education and offered a 3 hour workshop on basics of curriculum innovation to engineering faculty and department heads as well as invited guests.

NSF Sponsored Workshop: Exploring How People Learn Engineering

Are you interested in expanding your knowledge and skills in conducting high-quality engineering education research? If so, EXPLORING HOW PEOPLE LEARN ENGINEERING, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, is a workshop that may be for you.

The workshop, intended for those with prior experience in conducting engineering education research, will be held in Golden, Colorado USA on August 2-4, 2010. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

(1) describe relevant psychological models of student learning

(2) apply these models to learning engineering

(3) develop a substantive engineering education research question

(4) develop a theory-based research plan to answer the research question

All costs during the workshop (hotel, food, workshop materials) will be paid by the project. Participants must pay for their own travel expenses to and from Golden, Colorado.

More information and an online application form may be found at: http://rree.csmspace.com/. EHPLE is part of a larger NSF-funded project entitled Expanding and Sustaining Research Capacity in Engineering and Technology Education: Building on Successful Programs for Faculty and Graduate Students, Ruth Streveler PI. Information about the larger program can be found at http://CLEERhub.org.

If you have questions, please contact Dr. Barbara Olds (bolds at mines.edu) or Dr. Ronald Miller (rlmiller at mines.edu), project coordinators at the Colorado School of Mines.
