A New Book on Engineering Education

Innovation and Assessment of Engineering Curricula. Valladolid 2009. - This book a collection of the presentations and other activities carried out at an International Symposium jointly organized by the University of Valladolid and SEFI Curriculum Development Working Group (CDWG) in May 2009. The Symposium was a discussion oriented meeting on topics such as Curriculum Innovation, Accreditation and Assessment, Active Learning, Project and Problem Based Learning, and Examples of Good Practice in Engineering Education.

The information is arranged in several blocks, beginning with one containing the invited lectures. It is followed by papers from the different working sessions and poster presentations, arranged within each block alphabetically by the name of their first authors. The last section contains reports of the working sessions followed by one of the panel round on curriculum innovation, and workshop on innovation and assessment of curricula, in the English and the Spanish sessions.

The contents of the book can be downloaded from http://www.eup.uva.es/simposio09/english.htm.

Global Ranking of Universities Published

Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley again finished first, second, and third in the Annual Ranking of World Universities, published today by China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University. As in previous years, American universities dominated the ranking, filling out 55 of the top 100 positions. The only non-American institutions in the top 20 were the Universities of Cambridge (4), Oxford (10), and Tokyo (20). The Chinese university's ratings, which are based on a formula that includes the number of alumni who win Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of papers published in Nature and Science, and scholarly--citation indexes, is part of a growing global obsession with university rankings.

IFEES Website Survey Results Announced

The IFEES Secretariat would like to thank IFEES members for taking time to participate in the recent IFEES website survey and providing their valuable input. According to this feedback, most of the respondents use IFEES website regularly and find it useful. While many of them find content and layout of the website user-friendly, there are some things that could be further improved.

One of the most important goals of the website is to provide IFEES members with necessary tools to promote engineering education. Also, many have pointed out a necessity to create a forum for member discussions and better linkage between academic and corporate partners. Although IFEES website is not intended to be another social networking site, the Secretariat aims to add additional features that, hopefully, will address some of the concerns. The next step forward would be creating a couple of additional pages that will provide resources and information submitted by members. Therefore, members are encouraged to send in interesting publications, resources and other information they would like to share with fellow members.

The Secretariat would also like to build a "facts and questions" page, outlining clearly the goals and objectives of IFEES, as well as addressing questions from the potential members. Considering that Secretariat of IFEES and ASEE office have limited resources, the changes will take place gradually and we aim to implement these additions in the coming months. The result of the website survey are available here.

2009 IFEES Global Summit, St. Petersburg, Russia

May 18-23, 2009

The IFEES Secretariat would like to share the following update for the attendees and guests of the 2009 IFEES Global Summit, St. Petersburg, Russia. We want to emphasize that this is still under development but felt it necessary to provide you with at least some information at this time.

The 2009 IFEES Global Summit will take place on May 19-23, 2009, in St. Petersburg, Russia. Preliminary IFEES Summit program is available herePDF(PDF: 134KB). The International Colloquium, hosted by the Russian Association for Engineering Education (RAEE), will take place on May 20-22. General information regarding this event, registration fees and preliminary program can be found on Colloquium's website: http://ac-raee.ru/colloquium.

Guest and participants should note that Russian visa processing may take longer depending on the type of visa and requirements of the local Russian consulates. IFEES Global Summit attendees are strongly encouraged to contact Russian consulate offices in their respective countries well in advance and find out visa requirements and application processing details. The following are the links to the Russian consulates in several countries:

There are currently two types of visa IFEES Global Summit attendees may consider applying for, business or tourist visa. Business visa invitation letters usually take longer to process, therefore attendees are encouraged to send their passport, institutional affiliation and contact information to the Russian organizers in RAEE at Colloquium@ac-raee.ru by January 15th, 2009.

The other option, tourist visa, can be arranged with the help of hotel Azimut, where majority of attendees will be staying and all IFEES Global Summit events will take place. General information regarding rooms rates, conference space and contact details for hotel's staff can be found at:
http://www.azimuthotels.ru/en/hotels/st_peterburg/about_hotel.

Please note that the tourist agencies at various Russian hotels charge different fees for their services of arranging invitation letters. IFEES Global Summit and Colloquium organizers will strive to make special arrangements for processing invitation letters for attendees staying at the Azimut Hotel. However, communication regarding invitation letters with the hotel staff and visa processing are sole responsibility of the guests and attendees.

Please note that the registration fees for the IFEES Summit and the RAEE Colloquium are still under discussion. We will finalize in late January.
