IFEES Strategic Planning Continues - 2007 Engineering Deans Institute (EDI) “Diversity in Engineering April 15-18, 2007 San Juan, Puerto Rico14 May 2007

IFEES Strategic Planning Continues

Several IFEES members from across the world met in Puerto Rico from April 15 to 18 at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) annual Engineering Deans Institute (EDI). Seeram Ramakrishna of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Engineering Deans Steering Committee; Javier Paez of ASIBEI (Ibero-American Association of Institutes of Engineering Education), and Vice President of IFEES; Krishna Vedula of the American Society for Engineers of Indian Origin (ASEI); Lueny Morell of the IFEES Executive Committee; Xavier Fouger of Dassault Systemes; and the IFEES Secretariat met to further the IFEES strategic planning process. Maria Larronda Petrie, IFEES Executive Committee member and Gerardo Ferrando, representing the International Association for Continuing Engineering Education (IACEE), joined by phone. Discussions were held with leaders of the EDI regarding the concept of creating a Global Deans Council, an important dimension of the IFEES strategic plan. Seeram Ramakrishna has agreed to lead this global initiative.

The IFEES strategic planning process will continue at the ASEE Annual Conference in Hawaii on June 24-27 and at the SEFI/IGIP joint conference in Mischkolz, Hungary on July 1 to 4. The committee aims to complete the IFEES strategic plan by the 2007 meeting of the IFEES General Assembly on October 1, 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The first annual IFEES Global Summit on Engineering Education will take place on September 30, 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey, in conjunction with the ASEE Global Colloquium on Engineering Education. The program committee for the Summit is co-chaired by Maria Petrie and Federico Flueckinger and the host of this meeting will be the Turkish Deans Council, represented by Professor Ali Kaylan. It is expected that the Turkish Deans Council will officially join IFEES before the Summit commences.

The program for the meeting is nearly complete and invitations have been sent to selected speakers. Student representatives are fully engaged in the planning of the IFEES Summit and will also present papers.
