The paper presents a set of competencies for the training of a professional engineer “guide towards sustainability”, according to the results of a research project on engineering education in Colombia. We consider the theory and some experiences related with competencies for sustainability in engineering education. The set of competencies sought is built from these studies and from some interviews. Additionally, we verify the importance and level of development of the competences of the set, through surveys of engineers, employers of engineers, university professors and students. Finally, using inferential statistics, it is shown the structure of the set of skills and draws broader dimensions in which the same can be grouped to form a map of skills.
