This paper presents the circumstances behind the proposal to institute a design engineering graduate program at the University of the Philippines at Diliman (UPD). Originally, the UPD Department of Chemical Engineering proposed its own program, which was not implemented. The problem was resolved through the use of “probing paradigms to generate ideas”, developed by this author. To probe paradigms, (a) we study, analyze, and thoroughly explore paradigms; (b) find insights, perspectives, points of view, etc.; (c) systematically organize the ideas and map them in the mind; and (d) connect ideas within paradigms, to come up with new ideas. The technique enlightened us in identifying the necessary information, such as the multidisciplinary nature of the field and the needed components of the program. The following subjects were proposed: Principles of Design Engineering, Innovation and Creativity in Design, Design for Environment and Sustainability, and specialized courses from each discipline.
