INDICADORES DE LA FORMACIÓN PROFESIONAL PARA EL DESARROLLO SOSTENIBLE. UNA PROPUESTA DE LA FACULTAD DE INGENIERÍA DE LA U.N.S.J.

Is sustainability education provided in accordance with the United Nations’ mandate for the UNESCO to transform the 2005-2014 Decade into the “Decade of Education for Sustainable Development?” This and other similar questions pose a challenge to educators and the scientific, social and cultural worlds.
This paper falls within CONFEDI’s (Federal Council of Engineering Deans) guidelines, which involve the formation process of Argentinean engineers in XXI century sustainable development and the administration of engineering faculties, which must guarantee the quality in the higher education. The paper is part of an interdisciplinary research project within an educational framework.
The bases of this study are the identification of sustainable development indicators and its conception as parts of the engineers’ Professional Formation. The method utilized consists in: the generation of instruments that facilitate the process of interviewing teachers and students belonging to the course of studies analyzed and the collection and processing of the data gathered. The fields from which indicators are defined emerge from this study.
Since the process is a slow and complex one, results are calculated and reinterpreted through continuous cycles of reflection, intervention and new planning. These results allow us to determine the degree of commitment the university has with the sustainable development approach and they contribute to the university’s decision making process and help those responsible for developing management and educational policies which will enable us to be focused on the path towards sustainability.
