India’s IITs to Spearhead Creation of National System of University Rankings


Indian IITs and education leaders are looking to create a national rankings system that would help to serve as a “mechanism for change and improvement,” says Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Current international ranking systems, including Shanghai Jiao Tong Unviersity and Times Higher Education, focus on international students, international research collaborations and research publications, and citations in globally recognized journals. Indian officials are hoping to take into account the “social responsibilities” of universities, and other relevant parameters specific to Indian institutions. An example of these “social responsibilities” is the consideration of initiatives that encourage people from disadvantaged social backgrounds, such as those from tribal groups and those from lower castes, to access higher education, a factor that is not considered in current international rankings.
