If We Don’t Know Where We’re Going, Any Road Will Take Us There – Finding a Larger Knowledge Classification Roadmap for Global Engineering

One of the larger challenges in designing new programs, or updating old ones to include global engineering is that the field itself – of designing products that will have marketability around the globe, or use talent pooled from different countries – has no consensus of the skills necessary for educating the next ‘global engineer.’ International conferences on engineering education have tended to generate ‘Superman Skills Lists’ that add more work to an already overburdened 4-year academic curriculum. This paper takes a theoretical approach to come up with a distilled set of competencies that is potentially masterable in a Bachelors Program with finite resources.
