Fostering an innovation environment to improve engineering education in Brazil

This paper provides a bird’s eye view of the different activities undertaken in the last fifteen years at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) aimed at improving the engineering education in the first two academic years. It is highlighted the importance of networking, synergy, and multidisciplinary project based learning approaches to bridge a wide gap in our educational system. The creation of an innovation environment is outlined and future prospects are discussed. Our experience may be useful to colleagues in other emerging countries facing the challenge of improving the current engineering education through active learning by doing and tackling real problems mapped out by their students in a proper environment.
