This paper describes the development of an educational robot vision system for manipulating objects in a cluttered environment in manufacturing. The vision system identifies objects of different shapes and sizes and sorts them accordingly. The specific objectives of the paper are (1) the needs for robot as an educational tool (2) the theory of vision system (3) development of the research based on the theory and (4) discussion of the results, conclusions and recommendations. A robot is a reprogrammable multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools or specialized objects through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks. Machine vision is relatively new technology and its process is continuing to improve. A simple conveyor belt system has been integrated along with the vision system to simulate a manufacturing environment. The research has demonstrated that an educational robot vision system can indeed simulate a manufacturing environment accurately.
