Creando Conciencia Ambiental en Alumnos de una Institución de Educación Superior

During 2011, a residue separation program was started with the collaboration of a collage institution in the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, México. The program started from an initial analysis of the behavior of freshman students on their willingness and knowledge towards recycling; then, the students subscribed to the environment and sustainability educational program acted as changing agents in a joined task with the Comisión de Higiene y Seguridad and the management personnel forming and preparing new groups. Afterwards, properly identified containers were installed achieving a recollection of 8,524 kilograms of paper and 2, 259 kilograms of polyethylene terephthalate (PET); this resulted in the reduction of 17 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
The program had an impact on 2,400 students in its first stage. It was applied only in one school building. As to the first 2012 semester, 1100 new students have been involved; this implies the gradual integration of each one of the remaining buildings; having to repeat the exercise in each school term.
