The IFEES Duncan Fraser Global Award for Excellence in Engineering Education recognizes individuals who have made innovative and meritorious contributions with a significant impact on the advancement of engineering education. IFEES encourages nominations of outstanding candidates from all regions of the world. IFEES will start accepting applications in 2018.
The 2017 Global Award recipient will be honored in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during the 2017 World Engineering Education Forum, which will be held from November 13-16. The recipient will receive a medal, citation, a one-time monetary prize of US $1,000, round-trip economy class plane ticket, and three nights lodging to receive the award.
Members of the IFEES community are encouraged to nominate an individual who they believe falls within the criteria of having provided extraordinary leadership and impact in engineering education.
It is not necessary for the nominee to be a member of an IFEES member society; however, the nominator must be the representative of an active IFEES member society. A list of member representatives is available on the members section of our website. The nominator may nominate only one individual for the award.
It is critical that all nominators spend some time providing evidence regarding the measurable impact made by each nominee in the area of engineering education.
The nomination packet must include:
(1) Nomination Form
- Letter of nomination
- Rationale and statement of impact
- Executive Summary
- Identification of need(s) in engineering education that was addressed by the nominee’s work
- Description of contributions to engineering education that helped address the previously identified need(s)
- Evidence of the significance, originality, and scale of impact on the field of engineering education
(2) Nominee CV
The CV, whichshould not exceed four pages, needs to include:
- Nominees full name
- Contact information
- Educational qualification(s)
- Relevant experience
- Relevant publications
- Relevant awards and honors
(3) Three letters of support
Each letter should not exceed one page. If the nominator is not an IFEES representative, one letter of support must be written by an IFEES representative (list of IFEES representatives).
The recipient of this award is expected to have made an outstanding contribution to undergraduate or graduate engineering education and whose impact extends beyond the individuals’ institution of employment. Criteria to be considered include, but are not limited to:
- Educational Impact:
- Theoretical background in engineering education such as a university degree, teaching experience, authorship of educational materials related to engineering education, pedagogy and andragogy, and lifelong learning
- Curriculum development such as experience in helping academic universities evaluate and make improvements in engineering curriculum reflecting current research and current knowledge in the creation of “state of the art” learning experiences and design in engineering courses; contributions made by corporate or industry representatives to the educational program
- Development and use of educational tools such as the development and implementation of teaching/learning tools that are or can be made available to instructors and learners using a variety of technology, active learning principles, didactics, etc.; could be used in face-to-face or online programs to enhance the learning experience of learners and teaching experience of instructors
- Excellence in teaching such as demonstrated acknowledgement by students and peers of their teaching ability
- Engineering Impact:
- Research and development activities in engineering education such as demonstrated examples of integration and implementation of research findings/results in engineering education and on-going research with peers or students
- Training of engineering educators or students such as activities within and outside of one’s academic institution; serving on graduate committees, teaching classes for individuals interested in going into engineering education; consulting with other academic colleagues on a national or international level
- Mentorship of new faculty and students such as demonstrative examples of work sharing knowledge to help new faculty become better instructors; helping students at all levels prepare for successful engineering careers in industry or in academia
- Overall Impact
- Outstanding professional service such as the participation in professional and educational associations, policy-making bodies, national and international programs, awards, etc.
- Impact on diversity and the workforce such as the development of curriculum/programs to include more diversity and global competencies of engineers
- Outstanding contributions to engineering education literature such as the authorship of educational materials published in engineering journals or conference proceedings; presentations in conferences and workshops; recognition as a leader in engineering education
