A LACCEI –IGIP Partnership: Developing Internationally Recognized Engineering Faculty Excellence for the Americas

Faculty development is essential to educating engineers who can tackle the challenges of a rapidly changing global community. The technology and information sharing explosion throughout the world has irreversibly changed the way students learn. The learning environment in the classroom has to evolve as the incoming students have a new mindset toward education. As a result, academia should respond to those new challenges and faculty need to do more to keep up with the changes. Faculty need to engineer and direct the changes in education content and pedagogy to develop the engineers of the future. The Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI) has designed a program for faculty development based on the International Society for Engineering Education (IGIP) curriculum.
ING.PAED.IGIP International Engineering Educator certification, which is accepted as graduate credit in many institutions, prepare faculty to develop and implement active learning/team based pedagogies and to become change-agents in their departments and programs. This paper describes the collaborative initiative between LACCEI and IGIP to develop a program to prepare faculty for excellence in engineering education for the Americas. Modules on pedagogy fundamentals, laboratory didactics and research, as well as program delivery methods that will optimize faculty participation throughout the Americas will be described in details.
